Renewals & Rest Period

Understanding visa renewal rules critical for long-term planning.

Annual Renewal

Start 2-3 months before expiry. Company handles submission. New pass card issued upon approval.

Required:

  • Valid passport (6+ months remaining)
  • Current Employment Pass
  • Updated contract
  • Company confirmation letter
  • Renewal fees

The "Rest Period" Rule

After 2 renewals (3 years total), must physically leave Malaysia, return to Indonesia, wait for rest period, then reapply (can be same company or different).

Purpose appears to be:

  • Preventing permanent settlement
  • Rotating foreign workforce
  • Reducing dependency on foreign workers
  • Encouraging local talent development

Salary Threshold Exceptions

BPO Route

Exception applies once salary reaches RM 5,000.

Professional Route

Exception applies once salary reaches RM 10,000.

Once threshold exceeded, restriction lifts permanently as long as salary maintained.

Strategic Planning

BPO Workers (Target RM 5,000)

  • Starting salary often already RM 5,000
  • Maintain through raises/promotions

Professional Workers (Target RM 10,000)

  • Requires aggressive career progression
  • Job hopping to MNCs
  • Specialization in high-demand skills
  • Management track promotions

If must return to Indonesia:

  • Save 3-6 months expenses
  • Maintain network in Malaysia
  • Keep skills current
  • Keep employment records
  • Reapply quickly

Permanent Residency Reality

Cannot get citizenship even if child born in Malaysia. Birthright citizenship does not exist.

Permanent residence very difficult. Paths are:

  1. Marry Malaysian citizen (if spouse Muslim, conversion required)
  2. Multi-million RM asset ownership
  3. Government-approved "exceptional talent" (rare, usually C-level/researchers)

Most Indonesian workers accept temporary stay (3-10 years typical). Plan for career progression or return.

Banking Limitations

As foreign worker:

  • Credit cards nearly impossible regardless of salary
  • Personal loans very difficult
  • Car loans possible but strict
  • Housing loans almost impossible

Workarounds: Use debit cards (Visa/Mastercard works globally), build bank relationship over years, company salary advances if available, pay cash for big purchases.

Daily Transfer Limits

Foreigners limited to RM 10,000 per day for money transfers. Even with RM 30,000 monthly salary, still limited to RM 10,000/day. Send money home across multiple days or use multiple transfer services.

Long-Term Options

Career Progression

Break RM 10,000 threshold, move to Category I Employment Pass, explore PR (still difficult).

Stepping Stone

Gain 3-5 years experience, leverage for opportunities elsewhere. One person noted 10+ foreign worker friends left Malaysia for Netherlands, Dubai, etc.

Return to Indonesia

Build career capital, return with MNC experience, higher value in Indonesian job market.
